The new Greater MP Chamber of Commerce successfully celebrated its first annual lunar New Year event with a huge gala attended by more than 200 individuals last Thursday. The event was held at the Empress Harbor Restaurant (chamber member) on Atlantic and Garvey Ave. in Monterey Park.
In addition to event sponsor Delta Air Lines and the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District, a number of companies including FSIC Investments, Kim Phuoc Jewelry, Sparks Academy, Oriana Chan, Dora Leung & Associates, ORT College, Exact Tax, Reggie Shum, Forest Lawn and West Valley Journal. Local community organizations also participated including the Kiwanis Club of Monterey Park, West San Gabriel Valley Association of Realtors, Inc., Boy Scout of America Troop 329, LAMP Optimist Club, Konko Church of Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley Entrepreneurs Lions Club, Rotary Club of Monterey Park, American Cancer Society, and the Quangzhou Chamber of Commerce. A host of chamber members also dontated silent auction for the event. Delta Air Line donated a round-trip ticket to Shanghai.
Johnny Thompson of Johnny Thompson Music provided the sound system for the evening. Orian Chan coordinated the lion dance and martial arts demonstration and Georgiana Szeto & the International Business Women Organization provided entertainment for the event. The ladies of the organization modeled “qi-pao” or “cheongsam”, traditional Chinese dresses for the enthralled audience.
Local dignitaries were also on hand for the celebration including U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu and State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez and College Trustee Mike Eng (who also served as auctioneer). Chin-Ho Liao, Vice-Mayor of the City of San Gabriel came. He even won the “Best-Dressed” male qi-pao contest. He donated his prize winning of $50 back to the Chamber. Monterey Park elected officials included Mayor Peter Chan, City Clerk Vincent D. Chang (also a Chamber past-president). Retired elected officials included Anthony Wong, David Lau and Lily Lee Chen (first Chinese-American Mayor of Monterey Park). Also present were Garvey School Board members Janet Chin and Henry Lo. Past chamber presidents present included John Man, Greg Tse and Dennis Gutierrez.
The Chamber’s next major event will be on March 19 kicking off the City of Monterey Park’s 100th Anniversary celebration.
